THE MAYFLY PROFILE DUN
The Mayfly Profile Dun is a good choice when the olives (Baetis) are popping up from the river bed. This is a pattern that presents a clear body profile to hungry trout.
This is a great fly to tie, and a fantastic fly to fish. The buggier you tie it, the merrier the result. I tie the body several different ways. If I want a buggy profile, I go for Hare dubbing. Here I have opted for standard FlyRite dub, that floats well and has colors that suits my waters.
The Rib here is French tinsel, but its possible to leave it out altogether or use pearl tinsel or an equivalent. Tailing options is really up to you and your choice. Make an Antron shuck, and you’ll have a special Sparkle Dun or use Fibettes to creates split tales. Here is a standard olive grizzly cock hackle.
The wing is a chapter of its own. Be careful to select two good CdC’s – one natural brown/gray and one dyed olive (colors in this photo lie). Use CdC Magic Tool and spin the fibres on the thread. Be careful to stroke back as you wind the wing towards the eye.
Hook: Hends BL 454 size 12-14
Thread: Benecchi 12/0 Olive
Abdomen: FlyRite #10 Blue Wing Olive and #41 Pale Olive (80/20)
Wing: Two natural or Blue Dun CdC feathers. Tied in horisontal to the shank, then cut across towards thorax
Tail: Micro Fibettes, four then split
Materials are listed in order of tying.
Fish dead drift as you would any other dun. Apply Tiemco Dry Dip Super.
